Ogden (1978) and Webb et al. (1988, p. 548-549) comment that there may be indigenous elements of Calystegia sepium in New Zealand. R. K. Brummitt (pers. comm.) regards C. sepium var. roseata<.i> as indigenous. C. sepium var. sepium is absent from New Zealand; the common "weed" previously regarded as C. sepium var. sepium is a hybrid between C. silvatica Griseb. and C. sepium var. roseata<.i> (R. K. Brummitt pers. comm. 2009).
