Rhizome solenostelic, creeping or short and oblique forming a small stock. Paleae us. present, and often hairs. Stipes not jointed to rhizome. Fronds pinnatifid to pinnately compound. About 12 genera of mostly terrestrial ferns.

Pteridaceae E.D.M.Kirchn.

Sori mainly fused to coenosori, protected by lamina margin, with or without a true indusium. Sporangia long-stalked, spores tetrahedral or bilateral, without perispore, about oblong, smooth to tuberculate; annulus us. narrow. Rhizome creeping and solenostelic, or forming an oblique stock and dictyostelic, bearing paleae or hairs. Fronds pinnately compound; veins free or anastomosing, no included veinlets. Prothallus cordate. About 10 genera of wide distribution.

Pteridaceae E.D.M.Kirchn.

Rhizomes erect or creeping, bearing scales or hairs. Fronds very variable in size and dissection. Sporangia on the abaxial surface of the frond, either scattered along anastomosing veins, or borne in sori along veins, at margin, or on a marginal vascular commissure.
