Original material (according to the protologue): "New Zealand (Northern Island). Near the lake [Lake Omapere – P.dL.] situated between Waimaté Mission House and the great forest of Hokianga. – 1834, Rich. Cunningham". Type (fide Raven, Raven, 1976: 169): "East of the lake between Waimate Mission Station and the great forest of Hokianga, North Auckland, New Zealand, 1834, Richard Cunningham (K)". Allan (1961: 260) partially typified the name thus: "Near the lake situated between Waimate Mission House and the great forest of Hokianga. Type: K, R. Cunningham, 1834".

Description

Herb forming dense or lax patches up to ± 20 cm. diam.; stems pale green to reddish purple, with internodes ± 1 cm. long; branchlets at first faintly bifariously pubescent. Lvs opp. ± crowded, subsessile; lamina ovate to suborbicular, 3-5-(10) mm. diam., pale green, often red-tinged below, subcoriac., glab.; entire or with a few minute denticles. Fls ± 3-5 mm. diam.; calyx-lobes ovate-lanceolate, glab.; petals white or pale pink. Capsules glab., reddish, (10)-20-40 mm. long; peduncles glab. (30)-50-100 mm. long. Seeds densely papillose.

Description

Creeping herb, rooting at nodes and forming loose mats up to 0.5 m diam. Stems strigillose or with short erect hairs on lines decurrent from margins of petioles. Lamina of lf very broadly ovate to orbicular, 2.5-14 × 2.5-15 mm. Floral tube 0.7-0.9 mm deep. Petals white, occasionally pink, 3-5 × 1.9-2.6 mm. Capsule glabrous, 2-5 cm long; fruiting pedicel 4.5-10 cm long.
